FLASS Rolls Out the Welcome Mat for the Class of 2026/27

More than 160 students admitted through the senior-year entry channel attend the FLASS faculty-based orientation on 4 August, where Dr Chan Man-ho, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies and Student Learning) of FLASS, encourages the new cohort to make good use of their time at the University to gain new knowledge and broaden their horizons.

Jointly organised by FLASS and the Student Affairs Office, with support from the Centre for Language in Education, the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation Education, and the Global Affairs Office, the faculty-based orientation kicks off a series of activities welcoming the new cohort of senior-year and first-year students.

As the 2026/27 academic year was about to begin, EdUHK’s campus came alive with a flurry of orientation activities in August. Orientation talks, campus tours, and other welcoming activities introduced incoming students to their programmes, campus facilities, and the range of support services available to them. They also provided opportunities for students to meet their future teachers and make new friends, helping them begin their EdUHK learning journey with confidence.

This series of welcoming activities began with the Faculty Orientation Reception co-hosted by the Student Affairs Office (SAO) and FLASS with support from other university centres, on the Tai Po campus on 4 August. More than 160 senior-year entry students attended the half-day reception, which introduced the Faculty, its four academic departments*, and the language, learning, and career support provided by various units of the University.

In a recorded welcome message played at the reception, Professor Ferrante Neri, Dean of FLASS, reminded students that in a world where machines can generate answers instantly, they must learn how to use AI and data as well as how to question them. “Tools will change. Platforms will disappear. What remains irreplaceable is your ability to think clearly, judge wisely, understand people well, and bring human responsibility to a world increasingly shaped by machines,” he said.

Dr Chan Man-ho, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Studies and Student Learning) of FLASS, followed with an overview of the Faculty’s management structure and the academic priorities of its four departments. He also introduced the new cohort of senior-year entry students to the range of support available at faculty and department level, including academic advising, internships, and overseas exchange opportunities provided across the Faculty and its departments.

Students also heard from various University teams, such as the SAO, the Centre for Language in Education, the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation Education, and the Global Affairs Office. Each unit shared useful resources and services designed to help students succeed. Individual orientation sessions followed the main session, where students were updated by their programme teams on the programme structure and learning expectations.

Professor Stephen Chiu Wing-kai, Chair Professor of Sociology, explains that the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Sociology and Community Studies emphasises experiential learning, with students applying theories through community-based projects.

Dr Haoran Cheung Ho-yin, programme leader of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Artificial Intelligence and Educational Technology of the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology (MIT), briefs students on programme design and reminds them that while generative AI may be used in assignments, they must follow guidelines, including clear disclosure of its use and purpose.

Dr Claudia Wong Ming-yu, Assistant Professor of the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) and programme leader of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sports Science and Coaching, tells students that they can gain experience as interns in partner organisations in Hong Kong or the Greater Bay Area during the summer before their final year.

Dr Echo Shang Liang of the Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies briefs the new cohort of senior-year entry students enrolled in the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Social Entrepreneurship and Development Studies about their future career pathways after graduation.

The new cohort of senior-year entry students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Integrated Environmental Management (BSc(IEM)) programme listens attentively to a briefing by the programme leader, Dr Brian Man Yu-bon of the Department of Science and Environmental Studies.

As wealth management and family business management become more popular in Hong Kong, the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Personal Finance (BA(PF)) programme maintains a strong draw among senior-year entry students, who listen to a briefing by Dr Ray Lee Kwok-wai of the Department of Social Sciences and Policy Studies.

Orientation talks for students admitted to one-year full-time or two-year part-time Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary) and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) programmes under FLASS were organised on 4 and 5 August. On 11 and 12 August, first-year students admitted to FLASS’s 11 undergraduate programmes attended dedicated briefing sessions, where programme leaders outlined the focus, curriculum, internship opportunities, and career prospects of their respective fields of study. Later, during the University-wide New Student Orientation Days on 14 and 17 August, newcomers were welcomed by their seniors and enjoyed a vibrant array of performances and activities organised by different student societies.

 

On 5 August, Dr Lo Chung-kwan of the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology (MIT) updates students admitted to the one-year full-time or two-year part-time PGDE (Secondary) programme on key information for the new academic year.

Special orientation activities were also arranged by the SAO for non-local students to help them adapt to a new school environment, social life, and learning approach. To help newcomers understand the opportunities available at EdUHK, six KOL (Key Opinion Leader) sharing sessions were run from 20 August to 17 September, covering scholarships and awards, service learning, career development, psychological and cultural adjustment at EdUHK, and student financial assistance.

Every year, different sports clubs gather at the central plaza of the Tai Po campus to recruit new members, including the EdUHK Tchoukball Team, pictured.

To help new students feel at home and settle into university life, the SAO is running the New Student Orientation Days on 14 and 17 August. The University encourages new students to join student clubs and recreational associations, which will form an important part of their university lives. The Student Association of the BSc(IEM) programme, pictured, is recruiting new members.

As the new academic year begins, newcomers are settling in by attending classes, making friends, and engaging in extracurricular activities across campus. The Faculty warmly wishes all students a fulfilling and rewarding experience at EdUHK.
